Take 5 in Nursery

As part of the whole school approach to well-being and self-care, we have highlighted the ways in which nursery regularly engages with the ‘Take 5’ theories and practices;

  • Connect – In nursery we aim to establish positive relationships with all of the children (and parents!). We create and promote opportunities for children to achieve, feel good and be proud of themselves and each other. This promotes their self-esteem and positive impression of themselves and creates a solid foundation which allows for a greater enjoyment of interaction with others. We share positive experiences, create a sense of community and family in our class and build connections and relationships with others.
  • Be Active – This is possibly the children’s favourite thing to do ever! In nursery we aim to be in the outdoor environment as much as possible and provide opportunities for children to engage in physical development and movement both indoors and out. Being active regularly leads to greater wellbeing, lower rates of anxiety and depression, regardless of age! Physical activity also encourages the release of endorphins (which is often referred to as the happy hormone) which helps people to feel good, regulate mood and cope better when faced with change.
  • Take notice – Young children can find it difficult to understand and manage their emotions. One of our first focuses in nursery is ‘Emotions’. This is in order to support the children by explaining what their feelings are, why they may feel a certain way and equip them with the language to identify and verbalise their emotions so they can talk about what they are experiencing. A greater awareness and ability to speak about emotions leads to a child having better emotional regulation and a greater ability to deal with challenging experiences.
  • Keep Learning – In early brain development the role that play has is fundamental. Children learn through play and it comes naturally to almost all children. In nursery we provide many enriching, challenging and fun learning experiences for the children to take part in. Purposeful play is important for child’s well-being, overall development, understanding and for building their confidence.
  • Giving – The children are given time, attention, and a safe place to be listened to and also heard. The nursery team engage in role modelling and they lead by example throughout the day. Children are also encouraged to engage in this and are supported in the development of their skills and abilities with attention and listening, and to create and maintain a pleasant environment where they, and their peers, feel safe.
