Welcome to Numeracy support which has a lovely refurbished room where the P5,P6 and P7 groups are able to work  without distractions.

The normal daily routine for each group is as follows:

  • check homework diaries
  • daily tables test
  • mental maths activities
  • the same topic work that is being taught by the class teacher

Welcome back. Let's have a look at what is happening in Term 2.

JAN - FEB

P5 will be working on the following:-

  • continue to learn and revise times tables facts as this will have a great impact on their progress in a wide range of numeracy topics.
  • fractions.
  • angles
  • decimals
  •  a variety of problem solving activities.
With the progress in tables and the use of multiplication the children will be able to explore how to solve problems for all four functions, with the emphasis being on recognising key vocabulary in questions and subsequently being able to carry out the correct calculations.

P6 will be working on the following.

  • properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
  • angles in the world around us and practising our protractor skills.
  • decimal numbers, fractions and percentages and how the three are linked.
  • develop confidence in tables and mental maths, which we can use in real life.
  • focusing on developing our problem solving strategies and skills.

P7 will be working on the following:

  • Area & Perimeter
  • Conversion of Units
  • Fractions, Decimals & Percentages
  • Algebra.
  • We will be carrying out a number of problem solving investigations related to these topics. Remember that mental maths is important and keep practising table facts and number bonds with your child. We will be focusing on the terms 'factors' and 'multiples'.

P7 will be working on:

  • fractions:- equivalent, improper and mixed.
  • decimals and percentages.
  • quick recall of table facts
  • types of graphs and tables linked to the topic on space.

Once  a fortnight we visit the computer room to work on Education City.’  This is a valuable tool to recognise where each child’s strengths lie and what areas need further support.

We are using the mnemonic "RUDE" to follow the steps that enable all pupils to select the important information needed to solve a problem.

R- read the question carefully.

U – underline the important numbers and words.

D- decide, do we add or subtract?

E- execute. Set out the sum and work out the answer.

Please use opportunities at home to reinforce these steps.

Thank you

Mrs McIlwaine
