## Mrs McIlwaine Numeracy Support

Welcome to Numeracy support which has a lovely refurbished room where the P5,P6 and P7 groups are able to work without distractions.

The normal daily routine for each group is as follows:

- check homework diaries
- daily tables test
- mental maths activities
- the same topic work that is being taught by the class teacher

Welcome back. Let's have a look at what is happening in Term 2.

JAN - FEB

P5 will be working on the following:-

- continue to learn and revise times tables facts as this will have a great impact on their progress in a wide range of numeracy topics.
- fractions.
- angles
- decimals
- a variety of problem solving activities.

With the progress in tables and the use of multiplication the children will be able to explore how to solve problems for all four functions, with the emphasis being on recognising key vocabulary in questions and subsequently being able to carry out the correct calculations.

P6 will be working on the following.

- properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
- angles in the world around us and practising our protractor skills.
- decimal numbers, fractions and percentages and how the three are linked.
- develop confidence in tables and mental maths, which we can use in real life.
- focusing on developing our problem solving strategies and skills.

P7 will be working on the following:

- Area & Perimeter
- Conversion of Units
- Fractions, Decimals & Percentages
- Algebra.
- We will be carrying out a number of problem solving investigations related to these topics. Remember that mental maths is important and keep practising table facts and number bonds with your child. We will be focusing on the terms 'factors' and 'multiples'.

NOV - DEC

All pupils that are given numeracy support will be working on the same topics as the class teacher.

P5 will be working on the following topics:

- subtraction of 2/3 digit numbers with an exchange.
- co- ordinates
- length
- table facts revise 3,4 and introduce x6
- problem solving.

P6 will be working on:

- Fractions.
- Equivalent frations
- fractions of an amount
- mixed and improper fractions.
- revise division.
- recognise the link between multiplication facts and division.
- quick recall of table facts of all tables.

P7 will be working on:

- fractions:- equivalent, improper and mixed.
- decimals and percentages.
- quick recall of table facts
- types of graphs and tables linked to the topic on space.
- Number and weight problems.

Parents of all groups please continue to support your child at home by asking table facts, playing tables games or use a computer game to help improve speed of recall.

SEPT - OCT

All pupils that are given numeracy support will be working on the same topics as the class teacher.

P5 will be working on the following topics:

- revise and learn number facts to 10 and table facts for the 2x5x 10x and 3x tables.
- reading and writing numbers up to 1000 and the value of each digit in a number.
- strategies to help with problem solving.
- addition and subtraction of larger numbers.

P6 will be working on the following topics:

- revision of table facts 2,3,4,5,10 x tables.
- reading and writing numbers up to 9,999/99,999
- round numbers to 10 and 100.
- partition numbers
- mental maths strategies.
- addition and subtraction of 4 digit numbers.
- Strategies to help with problem solving.
- fractions.

P7 will be working on the following topics.

- revison of all table facts.
- reading and writing numbers up to 99,999/999,999
- round numbers to 10, 100 and 1000.
- partition numbers
- mental maths strategies.
- addition and subtraction of 4/5 digit numbers.
- Strategies to help with problem solving.
- shape and height investigation

MAR - APRIL

P5 will be working on the following

- X4 , x6 tables and the link with division.
- perimeter and area.
- recording data and making our own predictions.

P6 will be working on the following.

- the link between fractions, decimals and percentages.
- area and perimeter.
- continue problem solving strategies.

P7 will be working on the following.

- sequences
- algebra
- 3D shape
- co-ordinates
- data handling.

JAN - FEB

All withdrawal groups will continue to work on problem solving strategies and investigations.

P5 will be working on the following.

- Learn 9x tables. Improve speed of recall on 2x3x4x5x tables
- Recognise the link to division and divide two digit numbers accurately.
- Learn the key vocabulary for the four operations, add, subtract divide and multiply.
- Problem solving investigations.

P6 will be working on the following.

- Naming angles and using a protractor to measure angles.
- Fractions, decimals and percentages how they are linked.
- Develop confidence in table facts and mental maths skills.
- Problem solving investigations using the four maths operations, co- ordinates, cubes and their nets.

P7 will be working on the following.

- Fractions, decimals and percentages.
- Ratio.
- Algebra.
- Quick recall of table facts and number bonds.
- Problem solving investigations.

NOV - DEC

All withdrawal groups are currently working on problem solving strategies.

P5 will be working on the following.

- improving speed of recall of table facts and number bonds.
- estimating and measuring accurately in centimetres and millimetres.
- function machines.
- mathematical language related to problem solving.

P6 will be working on

- maths investigations.
- fractions - of amounts, equivalent fractions using a fraction wall, mixed fractions using visuals and improper fractions.

P7 will be working on

- Investigations
- fractions, decimals and percentages.
- improving speed of recall of table facts and number bonds.

Once a fortnight we visit the computer room to work on Education City.’ This is a valuable tool to recognise where each child’s strengths lie and what areas need further support.

We are using the mnemonic "RUDE" to follow the steps that enable all pupils to select the important information needed to solve a problem.

R- read the question carefully.

U – underline the important numbers and words.

D- decide, do we add or subtract?

E- execute. Set out the sum and work out the answer.

Please use opportunities at home to reinforce these steps.

Thank you

Mrs McIlwaine
