P2-P4 literacy support

20th Jan 2017

Welcome back after our Christmas holidays. All our classes have started new topics for this term and we've all been very busy!

Primary 2

We have started our spellings. Please reinforce these regularly and help your child to write on the lines.  Remember- practise makes perfect. So far, everyone has been doing really well. Keep up the good work.

We enjoyed writing about dinosaurs in our new topic and through this topic we will be labelling diagrams, completing simple comprehension and writing descriptions of them in class. Why not try writing about a dinosaur at home? Can Mum or Dad guess which dinosaur you are writing about?

Keep up the good work with the reading. We have been practising our reading and comprehension skill- Remember- time spent reading is time well spent!

Over the next few weeks we will be learning lots of 'opposites'. Why not practise these at home too.

Primary 3

Our new topic is all about the weather. We will be writing weather reports and using lots of Wintery weather words to write weather forecasts and also revise putting words into alphabetical order. Please take time to watch a 'real' weather forecast on t.v. and talk about the weather. Why not ask your child to present the forecast in your own house?

We have been learning about verbs in class and had lots of fun acting out lots of action words.

Our spellings are beginning to get more tricky- please use the letters which were sent home to build words. This will help to reinforce spellings.

Our P3s have been enjoying our 'TRUGS' games and are now reading words at stage 2. Please use every opportunity possible to encourage your child to get reading and sound out new words. The more confident they are, the more fun they will have.

Keep up the good work with the written homework. Please use this as a time to encourage your child to complete work really neatly and help them to remember their full stops and finger spaces!

Primary 4

Our new topic is World War 2.(WW2) The children are really excited about his new topic and will be writing newspaper reports. It would be really useful for you to pick a headline which might interest your child and have a read through it. Encourage your child to read it for themselves.

Reading is given every night-please ensure your child has had their reading listened to at home and help them to sound out unfamiliar words. Re-reading the text again (and again) will help develop fluency, understanding and confidence. Children love to read out loud if they are confident!

Spellings must continue to be written neatly every night (Mon-Wed) and learned thoroughly. It's best to learn these every night- don't leave it all to Thursday night! Please remember to sign the spellings each night as well.

The children have been enjoying the new stories from 'Wellington Square' What a lot of adventures they get up to! Talk about the characters and remember to ask your child lots of questions about the story. As we move through the stories the children will be introduced to lots more characters.

Written homework has been completed to a good standard. Please use this as a time to reinforce what has been done in class and take the time to read any previous comments made. Don't forget to sign all written homework.
