P5AR( Ballykeel) and P5C (St Brigid's) learn to draw with a famous artist!

21st Mar 2018

On Wednesday 21st March, as part of our CRED programme, P5AR along with their partner class from St Brigid's, had a visit from a very famous local artist, Paul Bell. Paul is famous for his cow paintings. You probably have seen them in public places and restaurants. If not, have a look at our last photo: you can see one of Paul's paintings, which will be sold on Friday to a customer flying from Dubai to Northern Ireland in order to buy it!

First, Paul was interviewed by the children. We learnt that he started to draw around the age of 8 or 9 and never stopped! After working as a graphic designer for years, he decided to resign to have more time to paint. He got his lucky break when UTV came to film him and has been very successful ever since.

After the interview Paul taught the pupils how to use charcoal as a medium to create pictures. He showed us how to use simple shapes like rectangles, triangles and circles to create the outline of a cow. Then he demonstrated how to add curves to these basic shapes and shade some areas to create depth. He was very patient and we all drew our pictures step by step, following his instructions and watching his own drawing take shape - you could have heard a pin drop!

Have a look at the photos and watch the video to see Paul and the children in action!
