May and June Topics/ Six Areas of the Curriculum

The topics/themes for May and June are:

Transition to P1/ Care in the sun/ Fun Day Sports/ At the Seaside/ Holidays/ Summer

Language Development 

The children will be able to recall highlights of their nursery year and any expectations for Primary One. Children will become more familiar and recognise their own name and also the names of their new Primary One teachers. They will share stories about care in the sun and share experiences of holidays and trips to the seaside. They will describe the Summer weather and develop summer clothing vocabulary.

Early Mathematical Development

Children will take part in a variety of activities to encourage them to copy and predict patterns. They will explore weight and become aware of mathematical language ‘heavy’ and ‘light’. Children will be encouraged to use and reinforce this in everyday play. They will also be able to measure themselves and observe how much they have grown. 

The World Around Us

Children will be learning about the primary school buildings and will experience the physical layout and become aware of the rules of walking in the corridors and the school grounds. They will learn about dangers of water when playing near it at the seaside or paddling pools. Children will care for and observe living things in the environment and observe the wild birds in the nursery outdoor environment. They will also explore and investigate different methods of transport and identify how people travel on their holidays.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development 

Children will be involved in small group and whole class discussions in preparation for transition to P1. They will develop awareness of routine of raising hands to speak out in group discussions in preparation for P1. Children will participate in infant assembly and also will be able to experience school dinners in the canteen in the month of June. They will also learn about the importance of exercise (participate in fun day) and learn about the importance of taking care in the sun.

The Arts

Children will share their expectations and experiences of school and holidays through drama activities and creative play both indoor and outdoor. They will participate in a variety of craft activities e.g painting, model making and cutting in relation to our topics. They will participate in and enjoy creating music both in small groups and individually.

Physical Development 

Children will be able to observe and explore games and activities in preparation for Fun Day sports. They will be able to explore and strengthen gross motor movements with/without equipment in the hall and outdoors. Children will continue to develop scissor control and fine motor development through different activities. Children will also be able to explore abilities to negotiate new equipment in the P1 playground.
